Time between two times
Find the duration between two clock times in hours and minutes. Free time-between-times calculator with overnight support.
How the time between two times calculator works
Enter a start time and an end time on a 24-hour clock. The tool converts each to minutes after midnight and subtracts. If the end time is earlier than the start time, it assumes the end is on the next day, so 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours. The big number is the whole hours, and the line under it gives the extra minutes and the total minutes. The result is never more than 24 hours, and the same start and end time gives 0.
Examples
| Start | End | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 09:00 | 17:00 | 8 hours |
| 08:30 | 16:45 | 8 hours 15 minutes (495 minutes) |
| 22:00 | 06:00 | 8 hours (next day) |
| 23:30 | 00:15 | 0 hours 45 minutes |
When this is the right tool
Use it when you only have clock times, for example a shift, a class or a flight’s departure and arrival at the same clock. It does not use dates, so it ignores daylight saving changes and cannot measure more than one day. For a span that includes dates, use hours between two dates or days between two dates. If you need the answer in minutes with control over overnight ranges, use minutes between two times.
Tips
- Use 24-hour times to avoid mixing up AM and PM. 14:00 is 2:00 PM.
- For pay, turn minutes into decimal hours by dividing by 60. 8 hours 15 minutes is 8.25 hours.
- For a countdown to a time later today, use the workday countdown or the countdown timer.
