Countdown timer
Start a simple countdown timer for hours, minutes, and seconds. Free browser countdown timer for focus blocks, breaks, and tasks.
How this countdown timer works
Enter hours, minutes and seconds, then press Start timer. When it starts, the timer fixes an end time on your device’s clock and updates the display several times a second. If you background the tab or your screen sleeps, the end time does not move, so the display catches up when you return. Press Reset timer to stop it and go back to the time you entered.
The timer runs only while this page is open. Close the tab and it stops, and there is no alarm sound. For anything where missing the end matters, use your phone’s built-in Clock timer as well.
Handy durations
| Use | Time to enter |
|---|---|
| Focus block | 25 minutes |
| Short break | 5 minutes |
| Hard-boiled egg | About 10 to 12 minutes |
| Plank hold or workout set | 30 to 60 seconds |
| Tidy-up sprint | 10 minutes |
| Presentation slot | 5 to 20 minutes |
Why a timer helps
A visible end gives a task an edge. Working until a timer ends, instead of until attention fades, makes it easier to start and easier to stop. If the thing you are counting toward has a date rather than a duration, such as a deadline on Friday at 5 PM, use the deadline countdown or the countdown to any date tool instead.
Keep a date in view
For dates you want in front of you all day, add them to Left as an Ahead countdown and put the widget on your Home Screen or Lock Screen.
Questions
Does the timer keep running if I switch tabs?
Yes. It counts to a fixed end time, so the display catches up when you come back. Closing the tab stops it.
Is there an alarm sound?
No. This timer has no sound. Use your phone’s Clock timer when you must not miss the end.
Can I set a timer longer than 24 hours?
Yes. Enter any number of hours. For a date-based countdown, the countdown to any date tool is clearer.
How accurate is it?
It uses your device’s clock and refreshes about four times a second, so it is accurate to well under a second.
