How the fiscal year progress calculator works
Choose the month your fiscal year starts in. The calculator takes the 1st of that month as the start, and the 1st of the same month a year later as the end. It then shows the share of the fiscal year that has elapsed, the share that is left, and the days remaining. The last day shown is the final day of the fiscal year, such as March 31 for a year that starts in April.
It works in whole months. If your fiscal year starts on another day, for example the UK personal tax year on April 6, the result will be a few days off.
Common fiscal year starts
| Start month | Where it is common |
|---|---|
| January | Calendar-year fiscal years, used by many companies and countries |
| April | India, Japan, Canada, New Zealand and many companies elsewhere |
| July | Australia, and many US state governments |
| October | The US federal government |
Your organization may differ, so check your finance team’s calendar before relying on these.
Using the percentage
- Budget pacing. At 50% elapsed, you would expect to have used about half of a budget that is spread evenly.
- Goal checkpoints. Compare progress to the percentage at the end of each quarter.
- Year-end planning. Start year-end tasks when 20% or less remains.
For calendar years, see the time left in the year and percentage of the year tools, or the quarter countdown. The year progress widget shows the calendar year on your iPhone.
Questions
What percentage of the fiscal year has passed?
Choose your start month above. The calculator shows the elapsed and remaining percentages, and the days left.
Does it handle a fiscal year that starts mid-month?
No. It uses the 1st of the month you choose, so a start on another day will be a few days off.
When does the fiscal year end?
On the last day of the month before your start month. For an April start, that is March 31.
Is the percentage based on time or on work done?
On time only. It shows how far through the fiscal year you are, not how much of your budget or goal is complete.
