Percentage of the year calculator
Exactly how much of this year has passed - and how much is still ahead - expressed as a percentage. Updates every second.
How year percentage is calculated
The calculator divides the number of seconds elapsed since January 1st at 00:00:00 by the total number of seconds in the current year (365 × 86,400 for a normal year; 366 × 86,400 for a leap year). The result is multiplied by 100 to give a percentage.
Because the calculation is time-based rather than day-based, the percentage advances smoothly throughout the day - not just at midnight.
The reverse lookup
Enter any percentage in the field above to find the date that percentage falls on. For example, 50% is the midpoint of the year: in a normal 365-day year it lands at noon on July 2, and in a 366-day leap year it lands at the very start of July 2.
Year progress on your iPhone
Left’s free Year widget keeps this on your Home Screen or Lock Screen: the year as a grid of symbols with the days already gone dimmed, plus either the time left or the percentage left. On the Lock Screen, the circular version shows the number in the middle. Left counts in whole days, so its percentage can differ slightly from the to-the-second figure above.
Seeing that most of the year has already gone, right on your Lock Screen, is a quiet but effective reminder to make the rest count.
Year progress vs time left vs days elapsed
The three related tools here give you different lenses on the same reality:
- Percentage - abstract, comparative ("I'm 60% through the year, and my goals are only 40% complete").
- Time left - concrete, forward-looking ("87 days, 4 hours").
- Time passed - backward-looking ("278 days since January 1st").
Start noticing what matters.
