How this fall countdown works

This tool counts to the autumnal equinox, the astronomical start of fall, when day and night are close to equal and the days start to shorten in your hemisphere. It guesses your hemisphere from your device’s time zone, and you can switch it with the Northern and Southern buttons. In the Northern Hemisphere fall starts at the September equinox; in the Southern Hemisphere autumn starts at the March equinox, the same moment as the north’s spring equinox.

Once the date passes, the counter moves on to the next autumnal equinox.

Fall dates for the next five years

Northern Hemisphere (September equinox, UTC date)Southern Hemisphere (March equinox, UTC date)

September 22, 2029March 20, 2029
September 22, 2030March 20, 2030
September 23, 2031March 20, 2031

The exact moment is given in Coordinated Universal Time. This tool counts to the start of that date at midnight in your time zone, so where you live the astronomical moment can fall a day earlier or later than the date shown.

Fall or autumn?

Both words mean the same season. “Fall” is more common in North American English and “autumn” elsewhere. The word “fall” comes from the leaves falling.

Astronomical vs meteorological fall

Weather services use whole months: fall is September, October and November in the north and March, April and May in the south. By that measure it starts on September 1 or March 1, about three weeks before the equinox. This tool uses the equinox.

Counting on to Halloween

If you are in the north, Halloween on October 31 is about five weeks after the equinox. The days until Halloween tool shows that countdown, and days until Thanksgiving covers the one after.

Put the fall countdown on your Home Screen

  1. Install Left on your iPhone, open Ahead and tap Add a date ahead, then New date.
  2. Name it First day of fall and set Starts to the equinox date for your hemisphere from the table.
  3. Leave Repeat set to Never. The equinox date shifts slightly from year to year, so add the next one once this one has passed.
  4. Save, then add Left’s Ahead widget to your Home Screen or Lock Screen and pick the date in Edit Widget.

Left’s widgets are free, and the free plan includes 2 countdowns. See the countdown widget page for sizes and Lock Screen options.
