How this spring countdown works

This tool counts to the spring equinox, the astronomical start of spring, when the sun crosses the celestial equator and day and night are close to equal. It guesses your hemisphere from your device’s time zone, and you can switch it with the Northern and Southern buttons. In the Northern Hemisphere spring starts at the March equinox; in the Southern Hemisphere it starts at the September equinox, the same moment as the north’s autumnal equinox.

Once the date passes, the counter moves on to the next spring equinox.

Spring dates for the next five years

March 20, 2029September 22, 2029
March 20, 2030September 22, 2030
March 20, 2031September 23, 2031

The exact moment is given in Coordinated Universal Time. This tool counts to the start of that date at midnight in your time zone, so where you live the astronomical moment can fall a day earlier or later than the date shown.

Why the date moves

The calendar year and the time the Earth takes to orbit the sun are not quite the same length, so the equinox drifts by several hours each year and leap days pull it back. That is why it usually lands on March 20 or 21 and on September 22 or 23, depending on the year and your time zone.

Astronomical vs meteorological spring

Weather services use whole months so seasons are easier to compare: spring is March, April and May in the north and September, October and November in the south, starting on March 1 or September 1. This tool uses the astronomical equinox instead.

Put the spring countdown on your Home Screen

  1. Install Left on your iPhone, open Ahead and tap Add a date ahead, then New date.
  2. Name it First day of spring and set Starts to the equinox date for your hemisphere from the table.
  3. Leave Repeat set to Never. The equinox date shifts slightly from year to year, so add the next one once this one has passed.
  4. Save, then add Left’s Ahead widget to your Home Screen or Lock Screen and pick the date in Edit Widget.

Left’s widgets are free, and the free plan includes 2 countdowns. See the countdown widget page for sizes and Lock Screen options.

Questions

When is the first day of spring in 2027?

In the Northern Hemisphere, the spring equinox is on March 20, 2027 (UTC). In the Southern Hemisphere, spring starts at the September equinox, on September 23, 2027 (UTC).

Is spring always on March 20?

No. It is usually March 20 or 21 depending on the year and your time zone. In the years listed above, the UTC date is always March 20.

Does spring start on March 1?

Meteorologists count March 1 as the start of spring in the north to keep whole months. Astronomical spring starts at the equinox, which is what this countdown uses.

Does the tool know which hemisphere I am in?

It guesses from your device’s time zone. If it guesses wrong, tap Northern or Southern to switch.
