Halloween is always October 31. The counter above runs to 00:00 on October 31 in your time zone, using your device’s clock, and moves on to next year’s Halloween once the day begins. Unlike Easter or Thanksgiving, the date never moves; only the day of the week changes.

A weekend Halloween usually means parties on the night itself; on a weeknight, many people celebrate the weekend before. Christmas is always 55 days after Halloween, if you want to keep the next countdown ready.

Where the date comes from

October 31 sits on the eve of All Saints’ Day, November 1, which is where the name comes from: All Hallows’ Eve. Many of its customs trace back to Samhain, the Celtic festival that marked the end of the harvest and the start of the dark half of the year.

• Four weeks out: plan a party and send invitations; venues and rentals book up.
• Two to four weeks out: order or make costumes.
• Two weeks out: decorate, and buy pumpkins; carve them only a few days before so they last.
• The final week: buy candy and check costumes still fit.
