How to Build a Streak on Your iPhone
A streak is one of the few productivity ideas that holds up in real life. Once you have a run going, you don't want to be the one who breaks it, and a number that grows every day is a steady reason to show up again tomorrow.

Streak, habit or Aim: pick the right one
In Left, all three live under Since, but they answer different questions.
- Streak: "how long since?" It counts time from a start date and increases automatically unless you restart it. Examples: days without alcohol, days since you quit smoking.
- Habit: "did I do it?" You mark it complete when you do it, on the schedule you set, and Left works out the streak from your completions. Examples: run three days a week, read every weekday.
- Aim: "how much?" It counts up or down toward a target number. For example, run 500 kilometers this year. See how Aims work.
The streaks vs habits guide has more examples.
Choose a schedule you'll actually hit
The classic mistake is "every day". Most habits don't need every day. Set the target slightly lower than what feels good. A streak you keep is worth ten you abandon.
Left gives you several ways to do that. A daily habit can run Every day, on Weekdays, on Weekends, on Specific days of the week, or a Number of days per week (any days, for example four). You can also set a weekly or monthly target, like three times a week or twice a month, on any days you choose.
Days outside your schedule don't break the chain. If your habit is set to weekdays, a quiet Saturday keeps the streak alive. Today doesn't count as missed until the day is over.
How to create a habit in Left
- Open Left, go to Since and tap +.
- Search for an idea to start from a template, or tap Build from scratch and choose Habit.
- Name it, then choose how often: per day, week or month, how many times, and the schedule.
- Turn on Get reminders if you want them. You can add up to four, each with its own days and time.
- If you already started before today, set Started on... to the right date, then save.
When you do the habit, open it and tap Log. If you logged it by mistake, Unlog habit reverses it. The detail screen shows days completed, days missed, your longest streak and a completion grid.
How to create a streak in Left
- Go to Since, tap + and choose Build from scratch, then Streak.
- Name it and, if you like, add a goal.
- Set Started on... to when it began, including the time. It can be in the past, but not in the future.
- If the streak has a natural end, turn on Has an end date and pick a Finish by... date.
- Choose your reminders, then save.
There is nothing to log after that.
Put it on your Home Screen and Lock Screen
Left has four widgets for this:
- Habit (Small or Medium, plus a rectangular Lock Screen widget) shows one habit. It is also the only widget that can log a habit: set its Layout to Text, then tap today's symbol to log or unlog without opening the app.
- Habits list (Small, Medium or Large, plus circular and rectangular Lock Screen widgets) shows the progress of 4 habits (Small or Medium) or 8 (Large).
- Streak (Small, Medium or Large, plus a rectangular Lock Screen widget) shows one streak in hours, days, weeks, months or years.
- Streaks list (Medium or Large) shows up to 3 streaks (Medium) or 7 (Large).
To add one, touch and hold your Home Screen, tap Edit, then Add Widget, search for Left and pick the widget and size. Then touch and hold it, tap Edit Widget and use Select habit or Select streak to choose what it shows. See the Home Screen widget guide and the days since widget styles.
Reminders that actually help
- Get a persistent reminder is for the habit you keep forgetting. Set Before what time? and, if the habit still isn't logged, a Live Activity appears on your Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island one hour before that time.
- Get elapsed-time reminders on a streak notifies you when more than a set number of days has passed without a restart. That suits streaks you reset on purpose, like "days since I called Grandma".
What to do when a streak breaks
For a streak, open it and tap Restart. Left asks you to choose when you restart, anywhere between the start date and now, so a slip on Saturday evening can be recorded as exactly that. Nothing is lost: Left keeps your Restarts, Average streak, Longest streak and the history of each run.
For a habit, a missed day ends the current run, but your days completed and longest streak stay. Habit strength moves through Weak, Stable, Strong, Automatic and Lifelong. It weighs your recent consistency and total repetitions alongside your current run, so one missed day doesn't send a well-built habit back to the start.
Either way, don't restart from zero in your head. The streak number is just data; the habit is the next action. To count a run by hand, try the habit streak calculator.

Share it for accountability
With Left Premium, you can ask a friend to keep you accountable. Add them in Friends first, then open the habit or streak, turn on Friends and tap Add a friend. Once they accept, they can follow that one item and send support or congratulations. See how accountability works.
What's free
The free version of Left includes 2 habits, 2 streaks and 2 Aims, plus all the widgets. The limit counts every item you have ever created, so deleting one doesn't free up a slot. Left Premium adds unlimited items, friends and Apple Health tracking. Prices are shown in the app before you buy. See the habit tracker.
Questions
What is the difference between a streak and a habit in Left?
A streak counts time since a start date and grows on its own until you restart it, which suits things like days without alcohol. A habit is an action you mark complete on a schedule, and Left works out your streak from those completions.
Do days off in my schedule break a habit streak?
No. Days outside the schedule you set, such as weekends on a weekdays habit, keep the streak alive without adding to it. Only a scheduled day that ends without the habit logged breaks the run.
Can I log a habit from a widget?
Yes, with the Habit widget on your Home Screen. Set its Layout to Text, then tap today's symbol to log or unlog. The other habit widgets, including the Habits list and Lock Screen widgets, show progress but open the app when tapped.
How many habits and streaks can I track for free?
Two habits, two streaks and two Aims. The limit counts every item you have created, so deleting one doesn't free a slot. Left Premium removes the limit.
